A memory card is an electronic data storage device used for storing digital information. These are commonly used in digital cameras, mobile phones, laptop computers, tablets, MP3 players, video game consoles etc. The memory card stores data, images, music, saved games or other computer files.
There are many different types of memory cards, below I have mentioned the most commonly used.
Types of Memory cards
* SD (Secure Digital) Memory Cards:
SD cards are the most used type of memory card and are compatible with most digital cameras.
* Compact Flash (CF) Memory Cards:
Compact Flash (CF) cards have very high storage capacities and fast processing times. Generally, they are found in the most advanced DSLRs. Canon uses Compact Flash as the recording media for use in its professional high definition (HD) video cameras.
* SDXC (Secure Digital ‘Xtra Capacity’) Memory Cards:
These are SD cards but with a much higher capacity and faster processing speeds. These are similar to SDHC, in that an SDXC fits in a normal SD slot – but some cameras are not able to recognize this newer technology, so always check in advance. Similarly, not all computers are able to use SDXC. Currently, Linux, Windows 7 and some earlier versions of Microsoft Windows are compatible.
* Micro SD Memory cards:
Micro SD cards are the smallest commercially available memory card but can store up to 2GB of information. The Micro SDHC versions are able to store much larger files up to 32GB. Micro SD cards are mostly used in GPS systems and MP3 players, however, a small number of digital cameras (certain Samsung compact models) are also compatible with them.
A flash drive, also known as a USB flash drive, USB drive, USB stick or USB memory, is a data storage device. USB flash drives are typically removable and rewritable, and physically much smaller than an optical disc. It is light-weight and used for storage, data back-up and transfer of computer files and photos etc. They can be read by many systems such as DVD players, automobile entertainment systems, and in a number of handheld devices such as smartphones and tablet computers, though the electronically similar SD card is better suited for those devices.
